| WELCOME TO
GURGAON |
A Fast
Developing City
About 30kms from
the centre of New
Delhi and a fast
developing city,
Gurgaon is perhaps the
most important of all
Haryana towns.
Originally it was
named Guru Gram or
Guru Gaon (teacher’s
home), and going by
the Mahabharata,
Yudhishtra gave the
area to Guru
Dronacharya for his
teachings on warfare
and arms to the five
Pandavas when they
were young.
This was the place
where Dronacharya
taught archery to the
Pandavas, and they
made good use of this
knowledge when they
had to shoot the
Kauravas.
Till Independence,
Gurgaon was a fairly
backward town, but
after that it rose to
the occasion. Now
there are a number of
big industries like
Atlas and the Maruti
automobile factory.
¤ Main Attractions
Not much to see here
in terms of history.
The Sheesh Mahal in
Farukhnagar is a
rectangular
double-storey building
and was built by
Fauzdar Khan in AD
1733.
It is so named because
of the intricate
mirror decorations
within. The complex
also houses a jail
which was used as,
well, a jail and a
torture chamber.
There are a few other
places worth seeing,
like Ghaus Ali Shah’s
shrine, Delhi Gate and
an old mosque.
Gurgaon is perhaps the
fastest developing
city in northern
India, and its
proximity to New Delhi
helps. Real estate is
booming here with new
buildings coming up
faster than you can
count them, and even
offices are being
relocated from
congested and
contaminated New
Delhi. Another plus
for this city is its
proximity to the New
Delhi’s International
airport which is just
15kms away.
¤ Hotels &
Restaurants
A number of good
hotels dot the city of
Gurgaon. The best
places to stay are
32nd Milestone which
has a bar, a
discotheque, go-karting
and hi-tech games for
kids and teenies. The
Bristol is a star
hotel with a nice,
homely feel to it and
an excellent
confectionery. The
Radisson, on the
Delhi-Jaipur highway
before Gurgaon, is a
little expensive but
has a great Sports
Bar.
You can also eat cheap
in a dhaba, and food
is fairly decent.
